What is Southwestern Advantage?
Southwestern Advantage, located in Nashville, Tennessee, has been in business since 1855. In 1868, Southwestern Advantage began helping college students finance their college expenses through running their own business selling books to families in their homes. Today, Southwestern Advantage is one of middle Tennessee's largest private companies. The independent student dealers market a family-oriented integrated leaning suite consisting of books, CD-ROMs, and membership to our websites that feature a variety of educational student resources.
Each summer, approximately 3,000 students are selected and professionally trained to take on the challenge of becoming independent contractors and learning all aspects of running a business. Students come from over 340 colleges and universities and nearly 30 countries to gain the skills and knowledge so many before them have received.
Since 1970, nearly 100,000 students have participated in our internship. Many former Southwestern Advantage student dealers now hold distinguished positions in their respective fields. U.S. Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn was part of the Southwestern Advantage internship program, as was Rick Perry, the Governor of Texas. In fact, there are thousands of doctors, lawyers, authors, pastors, teachers, entrepreneurs, and homemakers who have had the experience.
What We Do
Our products are sold to families in their homes by these students during their summer breaks. They are independent contractors and have the opportunity to run their own businesses by purchasing products from Southwestern Advantage at wholesale and selling them to customers at retail. The student dealers also have the opportunity to earn up to nine college credit hours (three per summer) that are transferable to most U.S. colleges and universities from Trevecca University in Nashville.
